Odds Formats Explained
Odds are expressed in various ways depending on where a sportsbook and its customers are geographically located.
Implied Probability
While sportsbooks don't typically express their odds in implied probabilities, all common odds formats can be converted to an implied probability. An implied probability is the percentage of times you'd need to win a bet (if you could bet it an infinite number of times) for that bet to breakeven.
For example, if your odds convert to an implied probability of 60%, your bet theoretically needs to win 60% of the time to breakeven. If it wins more than 60%, it'd be a profitable bet.
Keep in mind that sportsbooks add vig ("juice", "house edge", "tax", "fees", etc.) to their odds, meaning the implied probabilities of all outcomes for a scenario will have implied probabilities totaling greater than 100%.
American Odds
As you'd suspect, American odds are the primary format used in the United States. Odds in this format are expressed as a number greater than or equal to +100 or less than -100.
- American odds greater than +100 are underdogs. The larger the number, the less likely a result is to occur. +110 is a relatively slight underdog with a 47.62% implied probability to win, while +300 odds imply only a 25% chance. You stand to profit $110 if you bet $100 at +110 odds or $300 if you bet $100 at +300 odds.
- American odds less than -100 are favorites. The smaller the number, the higher the implied probability a side has to win. -110 is a slight favorite with a 52.36% implied probability, while -300 implies a 75% chance. You must risk $110 to potentially profit $100 at -110 odds, and you'd have to risk $300 to potentially profit $100 at -300 odds.
- American odds at exactly +100 (or -100) have an implied probability of 50%. A +100 bet pays out even money, so if you bet $100 at +100, you stand to profit $100.
Decimal Odds
Decimal odds are commonly used in continental Europe, Canada, and Australia. Decimal odds are a number greater than 1.
You can calculate your total payout by multiplying your bet size by the decimal odds. For example, a $10 bet at 2.5 decimal odds would payout $25. You can then subtract your bet from this total payout to find your potential profit ($25 - $10 = $15).
- Decimal odds greater than 2 are underdogs, with larger decimal odds being less likely to win. 2.1 converts to a 47.62% implied probability, while 4.0 converts to 25%.
- Decimal odds less than 2 are favorites. The lower the value, the bigger the favorite. 1.923 has an implied probability of 52%, while 1.25 is 80%.
- Decimal odds of exactly 2 have a 50% implied probability.
Fractional Odds
Most popular in the United Kingdom and Ireland, fractional odds are expressed as a fraction where the denominator is the amount bet, and the numerator is your potential winnings. For example, if you win a bet placed at 1/3 odds, you'll profit $1 for every $3 bet.
Fraction odds are also commonly used in the United States for horse racing.
- Fractional odds greater than 1 are underdogs, with larger fractions having a lower implied probability. 11/10 has an implied probability of 47.62% and 3/1 is 25%.
- Fractional odds less than 1 are favorites, with smaller fractions having a higher implied probability. 10/11 is an implied probability of 52.38% and 1/3 is 75%.
- 1/1 has an implied probability of exactly 50%.
Hong Kong Odds
Hong Kong odds are used in Hong Kong and other parts of Asia. Valid HK odds must be a number greater than 0.
You can calculate your potential profit by multiplying Hong Kong odds by your bet amount. A $10 bet at 0.5 HK odds will profit $5 if your side wins, and a $10 bet at 1.5 will profit $15.
- Hong Kong odds greater than 1 are underdogs, with larger odds having a lower implied probability. HK odds of 1.1 have a 47.62% implied probability, and 3.0 has a 25% implied probability.
- Hong Kong odds less than 1 are favorites. The lower the HK odds, the bigger the favorite. HK odds of 0.9 have a 52.63% implied probability, and 0.3333 has an implied probability of 75%.
- Hong Kong odds of 1 have a 50% implied probability.
Malaysian Odds
Malaysian odds or Malay odds are greater than or equal to -1 and less than or equal to 1.
- Negative Malay odds are underdogs. The lower the negative odds, the less likely they are to win. For example, -0.9 has an implied probability of 47.37%, and -0.5 has a 33.33% implied probability. To potentially profit $1, you have to risk the absolute value of the negative Malay odds. At -0.4 Malay odds, a winning $0.40 bet would profit $1.
- Positive Malay odds are favorites. The lower the positive odds, the more likely they are to win. 0.9 Malay odds have a 52.63% implied probability, and 0.5 Malay odds have a 66.67% implied probability. Positive Malay odds profit the odds' value for every $1 wagered. 0.4 Malay odds will profit $0.40 for every $1 wagered.
- Malay odds of 1.0 or -1 have a 50% implied probability and will profit $1 for every $1 bet.
Indonesian Odds
Indonesian odds (Indo odds) work very similarly to American odds, but Indonesian odds use a stake of 1 to calculate payouts rather than 100. Indo odds must be greater than or equal to 1 or less than or equal to -1.
- Positive Indonesian odds are underdogs, with larger numbers being less likely to win. 1.1 Indo odds have an implied probability of 47.62%, and 3.0 Indo odds have a 25% implied probability. For positive Indo odds, a winning bet will profit the value of the odds for every $1 wagered. For example, a $1 bet at 1.5 Indo odds will profit $1.5 if you win.
- Negative Indonesian odds are favorites, with lower numbers being more likely to win. -1.1 Indo odds have a 52.38% implied probability, and -3.0 Indo odds have a 75% implied probability. For negative Indo odds, you must risk the absolute value of the odds to profit $1. For example, a $1.5 bet at -1.5 Indo odds will profit $1 if you win.
